Grading for Proficiency

Our grading approach is guided by the Massachusetts Learning Standards, known as the Curriculum Frameworks. These set clear and consistent learning goals for each grade and help us focus on what really matters—your child’s growth, learning, and success throughout the year.

When we share feedback and progress about your child’s learning, we use the term proficiency, which refers to a student having learned and then demonstrated their learning in relation to a learning standard. For each standard, students have multiple opportunities to learn about content, practice skills, and build proficiency.

Reporting Progress

We communicate with families on numerous occasions throughout the school year. Beginning at Open House, continuing to Meet Your Teacher Night, and Parent/Teacher Conferences, we invite parents and guardians to be engaged in their school community and see them as partners in student learning and success.

Our report card is one additional way we communicate how each student is progressing toward these grade-level expectations. Report cards for Kindergarten through Grade 4 will be shared with families twice a year, in January and June.

Our newly revised, standards-based report card is designed to provide clearer, more specific feedback to students and families. With this update, families will gain a better understanding of what their child has learned, where they are making progress, and where they may need additional support. Students will receive ongoing, meaningful feedback tied directly to the priority standards in each subject area. Students’ progress is reported as one of four Performance Indicators:
