SUMMARY

Lawrence School, in Falmouth Massachusetts serving 563 students, grades seven and eight, created our Innovation School plan to link the current strengths of the school with the challenge of improving academic achievement and community engagement for the entire school population. The plan will be implemented between 2011-12 and the 2015-16 with support of the Office of the Superintendent, School Committee, and Lawrence School Council. Our school will use prioritized autonomies in the areas of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, School Schedule, Professional Development, Staffing, District Policies and Procedures, and Budget. These areas of autonomy and flexibility and will be structured with measurable annual goals and benchmarks in four key priorities:

  • Key Priority 1: Increased academic achievement for all Lawrence School students and significant reduction of achievement gaps with strong focus on literacy and technology integration in all areas of the curriculum

  • Key Priority 2: Social Competency that boosts community participation and engagement in learning for all Lawrence School Students

  • Key Priority 3: Student, Family, and Community Partnerships that enrich learning opportunities for all Lawrence School students

  • Key Priority 4: Professional Development and Distributive Leadership that recognize the essential role that Lawrence School teachers play in student  engagement and academic achievement of all students

Implementation: 2011/2012 through 2015/2016

The staff and current leaders of the Lawrence School understand that to close the achievement gap significant changes must be made to meet the learning needs of all students. The proposed plan is the culmination of months of self-reflection, conversation and collaboration within the staff, across the community and between the administration to redirect our resources and take responsibility to create a school fully utilizing the autonomy Innovation School model provides. The Lawrence School, with the support of the district and community, is ready to seize this opportunity to transform and refine our systems and practice to increase student engagement and academic achievement.
